Although musician Miley Cyrus has been with her now-husband Liam Hemsworth for 10 years, the couple didn't tie the knot until December 2018. In that moment, they went from a happily engaged couple to a happy husband and wife. But for Cyrus, "wife" is a title she chooses to avoid in favor of something more modern: partners.
Cyrus, who graces the cover of ELLE's August issue, recently opened up to the publication about her views on marriage. "I think it's very confusing to people that I'm married," she told ELLE. "But my relationship is unique. And I don't know that I would ever publicly allow people in there because it's so complex, and modern, and new that I don't think we're in a place where people would get it."
The singer also made it clear that she has some major opinions on the some people's outdated views on marriage. "Do people really think that I'm at home in a f*cking apron cooking dinner?" she joked. "I made a partner decision. This is the person I feel has my back the most. I definitely don't fit into a stereotypical wife role. I don't even like that word."
Viewing her marriage as a partnership is mostly due to her parents' relationship, she told the publication. "They were always partners," she said. "That's why I like that word. 'Husband and wife' sounds like a cigarette commercial from the '50s to me."
Although "wife" might not be her favorite word, she still can't help but blush when it comes out of her husband's mouth. Hemsworth won the Excellence in Film Award at the G'Day USA Gala in Los Angeles in January and referred to Cyrus as his "beautiful wife" during his acceptance speech, causing her jaw to drop before turning into a smile. Whatever this couple wants to call it, it is no surprise that Cyrus is doing her marriage her own way and all brides-to-be should follow suit.
